Bulldog Skincare: Taking care of men's skin the right way

. 6 min read

Skin, it’s all the same right? Not quite…and whilst some men might think they can get away with using a cheap bar of soap to wash their face every day, they’re wrong. Fear not, Bulldog are here to save the day for men around the country and have formulated a range of products to make skincare feel a little more masculine.

We’re going to take a closer look at men’s skin, why it’s different and how to take care of it the right way.

What makes men's skin different to women's skin?

The first thing to note is that men have thicker skin then women (25% thicker to be precise), and to make the women a little more jealous - men also have more collagen in their skin, which means their skin doesn't age as quickly as women's skin. However, if men are neglecting their skincare, then this all flies out the window and their skin can become dull, fast.

The bad news continues because adding to that, thicker skin also means dry skin and rough skin is more common in men. These differences in men's skin and women's skin are down to hormones, testosterone in particular. Testosterone can cause skin to be thicker and contributes to the production of increased sebum, which can also make men more susceptible to oily skin, spots and blackheads.

A daily routine for your skin

You're going to need to start with a skincare routine, which means picking up the right skincare products for your skin type. Thanks to Bulldog, taking care of your skin doesn't need to be difficult nor does it need to be expensive. We also love that Bulldog try to make their skincare products as natural as possible and that their products are also packaged in sugarcane plastic, making it great for your skin and the planet. So where do you begin on your journey to achieving better, healthier skin?

Cleanse

No matter what type of skin you have, cleansing is essentials to remove any oil, dirt and dead skin cells that build up on your face. Whether you have dry skin, sensitive skin, oily skin or normal skin, you must begin your skincare regime with a facial cleanser, and thankfully, Bulldog have a range of cleansers for all skin types.

If you have normal/dry skin, then the Bulldog Original Face Wash is the cleanser for you, it's enriched with aloe vera, camelina oil and green tea for a deep clean and a non-drying finish that will leave your face feeling refreshed. For a deeper clean, you could opt for the Bulldog Original Face Scrub which will work to exfoliate your skin and remove any dead skin cells and buff your skin to leave it feeling smooth and deeply cleaned.

If your skin is more on the oily side, then then Bulldog Oil Control Face Scrub is a better option which contains witch hazel, willow bark and juniper. Witch hazel is great for reducing acne, willow bark helps in reducing excess oil and juniper has antibacterial properties to reduce clogging in pores which can cause breakouts. The Bulldog Oil Control Face Scrub has been specially formulated with purifying charcoal to exfoliate and balance the skin, this helps to minimise excess oil, leaving you with healthy skin that is softer and smoother.

You may have heard that you should wash your face in hot water to open your pores and cold water to close your pores, well the experts at skincare.com state that isn't true, it's a myth. Pores do not open or close according to temperatures, however what the warm water will do is clean the gunk and grime that's stuck in your pores, so it's advised you wash your face with lukewarm water. Just make sure it's not too hot, as this will cause your irritation to your skin which can lead to breakouts.

To dry your skin, we recommend letting your face air dry, but if you must use a towel then make sure you pat dry your face. Rubbing the towel to dry your face will only irritate your skin.

To shave or not to shave?

Now this step is dependent on whether you’re clean shaven or have a beard. If you keep your facial hair, then all you need to do as mentioned earlier in the article is liberally apply some Bulldog Original Beard Oil to moisturise the skin under the beard and the beard itself.

Now if you're someone that shaves, you're going to want to get the perfect shave every time, especially if you have sensitive skin. A bad shave comes with some nasty side effects, you can get itchy skin, ingrown hairs, razor bumps and cuts, but Bulldog have a carefully curated range of shaving products to help you get the perfect shave.

We recommend getting your hands on a good quality razor, one that delivers a close and comfortable shave and will protect you against any razor burns nicks or cuts. Bulldog's Sensitive Bamboo Razor fits the bill with its pivoting razor that allows you to shave around those hard to reach areas, and 5 lubricated blades that will deliver a close shave and reduce the chance of ingrown hairs.

You're also going to need to pick between a good quality shaving cream or shaving gel, and this comes down to preference. The main difference between a shaving cream and shaving gel is the amount of lather produced, you’ll want more lather for a full shave, and less lather for a shaping shave.  If you need more lather then Bulldog's Sensitive Shave Cream is the one for you, but if you need less lather and more transparency then Bulldog's Sensitive Shave Gel is the better option for you. Both have been formulated with baobab oil which is a rich source of omega fatty acids which helps in fighting inflammation, this makes both products a great choice for sensitive skin.

To finish off your perfect shave, you'll want to gently massage your face with an after shave balm, this will protect your skin post shaving, and reduce any itching or other forms of skin damage. Bulldog's Original After Shave Balm is made with aloe vera, camelina and green tea to soothe the skin, but if you've got sensitive skin then Bulldog's Sensitive After Shave Balm will protect and soften your skin thanks to its gentle formula containing baobab, oat, willow herb.

Moisturise

The last thing you want is dry skin so it's time to finish off your skincare routine and keep your skin hydrated, nourished and protected with a good quality moisturiser. Moisturising your skin is a vital stage in your skincare routine as it will help you maintain good skin health, aid in keeping your skin blemish free and fight against wrinkles.

A good moisturiser will be made from natural ingredients and will leave your skin feeling hydrated with a non-sticky or non-greasy finish. Bulldog's Original Moisturiser will leave your skin feeling softer and smoother whilst the aloe vera, camelina and green tea will work to repair your skin. For sensitive skin, you can opt for the Bulldog Sensitive Moisturiser which will also leave your skin feeling hydrated and softer, and as it's fragrance free with no nasty chemicals, it's safer for your sensitive skin.

Worried about ageing and keeping the wrinkles away? Bulldog's Age Defence Moisturiser for mature skin contains an antioxidant complex of Rosemary, Echinacea and Vitamin E. It has been specially formulated to hydrate the skin, leaving it feeling smooth and nourished.

Healthier Skin Days Are Ahead

Now that you've got your skincare routine locked in with Bulldog's natural range of skincare products, you no longer need to worry about scrubbing your face with bar soap, shaving with a blunt razor or walking out of the house without applying some moisturiser. No more dehydrated skin that looks lacklustre and dull as your newfound skincare routine will leave you with flawless skin that looks and feels good, whilst also giving you a boost of confidence.
