If you've ever had the perfect shave before, you'll know it's a great feeling. No cuts, no ingrown hairs, and no razor burn - just smooth and soft skin. Getting the perfect shave can be a rare feat if you don't know what you're doing though. Luckily for you, we've put together this handy guide to ensure you can get the closest shave known to man every single time.
When Is the Best Time to Shave?
There's no 'perfect' time to shave because it really depends on you and your schedule.
If you're a morning person and have plenty of time on your hands, then a morning shave is best for you. There’s something about starting your day off with a fresh shave that lifts your mood and boosts your confidence, leaving you ready to conquer the day ahead.
On the other hand, if you aren't a morning person then we suggest leaving your shave till the evening. You’ll have plenty more time so you can give your shave the care and attention it needs to avoid any disasters.
So, the answer is that it's totally up to you!
How Often Should You Shave?
The answer to this question depends on how fast your facial hair grows back and the type of look you want to achieve. If you don't mind rocking some stubble, then you can get away with shaving every 2 to 3 days, but if you prefer the clean-shaven look then we recommend shaving every 1 to 2 days.
One thing to note is that shaving everyday isn't a good idea. When you shave, you're removing dead skin cells along with your hair, so in between shaves your skin needs time to heal. Shaving daily will disrupt your skins healing process and may leave your face feeling sore.
What About Shaving Products?
To get the perfect shave you need to use the right products, so it's time to sack off the disposable razors and upgrade your shaving solution. Here's what we recommend using so you can get the best shave you've ever had.
Bulldog Sensitive Bamboo Razor
Bulldog's Sensitive Bamboo Razor delivers a great performance with its 5-blade head which allows you to get a closer shave. The razor has a heavier handle than others which means you only need to use a light pressure when shaving, this will allow the weight of the razor do most of the work. It even comes with a replacement head for when your blades get blunt so the razor can easily be reused.
King of Shaves Sensitive Shave Gel
Before you pick up that can of shaving foam, give King of Shaves Sensitive Shave Gel a go. It's easier to use and far less messy than using shaving foam or shaving soap. It has a vegan friendly formula that is better for sensitive skin with the addition aloe and tea tree oil - two natural ingredients that are known for their skin healing abilities. What we love about this shaving gel is that it's transparent so you can see exactly where you're shaving meaning you’ll never miss a spot again.
You can also get your hands on the King of Shaves Sensitive Shave Gel Refill pack too so you can easily fill up your original bottle and cut back on buying multiple cans of shaving gel.
Bulldog Original Aftershave Balm
An aftershave balm is a must have in your grooming bag. Your skin is vulnerable to redness, itching and ingrown hairs, so using an aftershave post-shaving will help to calm your skin and protect it. Bulldog Original Aftershave Balm contains aloe vera to keep your skin soft and moisturised, as well as camellia oil and green tea which will help to heal and soothe your skin.
4 Steps to a Perfect Shave
Now that we’ve covered the basics of shaving, here are the steps you need to follow to make sure you get the most perfect shave you've ever had.
Step 1: Pre-Shave Preparation
Preparing your skin before shaving is essential to achieve a smooth and pain-free experience. We highly recommend that you take a shower before you shave. This will help to soften your hair follicles which will reduce razor burn and ease skin irritation. If you don't have the time to shower beforehand, just give your face a wash with warm water.
Step 2: Gel Your Face Up
Pump 1-2 squirts of the King of Shaves Sensitive Shave Gel into your hand and thoroughly massage into your wet stubble or beard. Make sure you've covered all your bearded area with the shaving gel, especially where your skin is prone to redness and itching after shaving.
Step 3: Shave Away
It’s time to get shaving with your Bulldog Sensitive Bamboo Razor. Be gentle and shave in the direction your hair grows to reduce tugging and irritation on your skin. If you're unsure on the direction of your hair growth, just rub a finger across your hair and you should be able to feel this. It's important that you take your time, apply low amounts of pressure, and don't pull at your hairs too hard when shaving. Be extra gentle on any areas where your skin is sensitive or where your skin is thinner.
Be sure to rinse your razor under the tap between each stroke to remove any hairs trapped in between the blades. This will make the next stroke smoother so you can remove as many hairs as possible with long single strokes.
Feel your face for any missed hairs and if there are any, simply reapply your shaving gel and shave again.
Step 4: Rinse, Balm & Moisturise
Onto the final step, rinse your face clean with cold water to close your pores and wash away any loose hairs. Pat your skin dry with a towel and apply the Bulldog Original Aftershave Balm all around your face and neck to keep your skin protected.
The Shaving Round Up
That's all it takes to achieve the perfect shave. You can finally say goodbye those nasty cuts and razor burns once and for all. Spending some extra time during your shaving routine can make all the difference, as well using the right products to help protect your skin and make shaving effortless.
