So you have dry hair?

You’ve seen the shampoo ads on television. You’ve been wowed by the beautiful hair that shines with strength and health. And you’ve thought, that’s what hair is supposed to look like.

But yours doesn’t.

When you look in the mirror, you see hair that’s dull, frizzy, brittle and broken. And you know that no amount of shampoo is going to fix that.

To find a solution, you need to understand what causes dry hair, what to avoid and how to care for your hair better.

Causes of dry hair

Your hair is lubricated naturally by oils produced in your scalp.

If your hair is dry, it’s either because your scalp isn’t producing enough oils, or the oils it’s producing are disappearing.

There could be a number of reasons for this.

Shampoo ingredients

Most shampoos clean your hair by removing the oils. But if the shampoo is too harsh, it can strip out all the natural moisture from your hair.

Some shampoos contain chemicals, such as strong or artificial fragrances, that can dry and irritate your scalp.

And some shampoos coat your hair with a microscopic layer of plastic. The plastic creates the illusion of strong glossy hair. But it actually creates a barrier around the hair that prevents natural moisture from getting in and leaves it dry.

To avoid these problems, choose shampoos that use natural fragrance and are sulphate and silicone-free.

Washing too frequently

According to experts at Healthline, this is one of the most common causes of dry hair.

When you wash your hair too often, you’re continually stripping the natural oils. And if you’re using a harsh shampoo, this could be making it worse.

Washing you hair less often can help. But if this isn’t an option for you, choose a milder shampoo that’s formulated for daily use and always use a conditioner after washing.

A great option would be Love Beauty & Planet Coconut Water & Mimosa Flower Shampoo. Thanks to its all natural and gentle formula, it's paraben free, silicone free and vegan friendly. You can also pick up the Love Beauty & Planet Coconut Water & Mimosa Flower Conditioner which helps to hydrate your hair, and it's made with plant-based detanglers.

Styling your hair

Repeated use of hot styling tools, like blow dryers, hair straighteners and curling wands can dry and damage your hair. You can limit this damage by using styling tools less often, or by using heat protection styling products beforehand.

Using bleach, home dye kits and chemical relaxers on your hair can cause extreme dryness and breakage. You should never attempt these yourself if your hair is dry to begin with.

Swimming in chlorinated or salty water can dry out your hair. You can minimise problems by wearing a swimming cap or limiting your time in the water and using a deep conditioning treatment afterwards.

In cold weather, you may notice your skin gets drier — and that extends to your scalp. This is because there’s less humidity and the air is much drier.  Indoor heating systems can dry the air even further. You can tell your hair is dry when it picks up static from your clothes.

But it’s not just cold temperatures you need to worry about. Wind, rain and sun exposure can all play their part in drying out your hair too.

If you’ve been exposed to the elements, treat your hair with a deep conditioning treatment to replenish the lost moisture and keep it healthy.

Your diet

Dry hair can be caused by deficiencies in your diet. To keep it healthy, you need to make sure you’re getting enough:

  • Protein
  • Iron
  • Vitamins (A, B6, B7 (biotin), B12, C and E)
  • Omega 3
  • Zinc

Your age

Your scalp produces less natural oils as you get older, so it’s even more important to take care of your hair. Some shampoos are specially formulated for people over a certain age.

A medical condition

Dry hair can sometimes be caused by a medical condition or a medication you’ve been taking. If you’re concerned, ask your chemist or doctor.
